To celebrate the 10th year of the establishment of the Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth at Sheffield University, (CSCY) this conference addresses the theme of diversity in the lives of children and young people.
Issues to be explored include, but are not restricted to:
- Children's and young people's diverse and cultural worlds
- Understanding identity and difference

- Structures and institutions as indices of childhood diversity
- Time, space and place
- Methodological innovations in childhood research
- Theorising similarity and difference

Conference Dinner
The conference dinner will be held on Tuesday 10th July at The Hepworth, H
olmfirth. Opened in October 2010 after extensive renovation, transforming it into a country chic retreat, The Hepworth is a restaurant and bar nestled in the beautiful and picturesque Pennine Countryside of Holme Valley and has been designed with impeccable attention to detail to create an atmosphere that has understated drama, yet opulent and welcoming. The upper dining area showcases exposed stone walls, wooden window lintels. Welcome and Networking
On Monday evening (9th) we would like to welcome all newcomers and old friends to the CSCY conference. This social event will start at 6.00pm. Further information will be available shortly.
Museum Trip
We are organising a trip to a Sheffield museum for a small group of delegates which will take place the day after the conference on the 12th July. Details will soon be available.
10th Anniversary Tea Time
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Centre we will be having tea and cakes on the last afternoon of the conference!
Information about abstracts and posters
All oral presentations will be 30 minute papers so you should plan to speak for 20-25 minutes and allow 5-10 minutes for comments and questions. Persons who are giving a presentation at the conference should register for the conference by 30th April 2012. The conference organisers reserve the right to exclude presenters who have not registered by this time from the programme. We would ask you forward your powerpoint presentations by 11th June to d.j.lessels@sheffield.ac.uk.
NOTE: We are looking at developing an edited volume on the basis of the papers.
Posters: A prominent display area will be available for posters accepted for the conference. Please complete the poster form and send, with your poster, to d.j.lessels@sheffield.ac.uk by the 11th June.
Getting here
With its central location, Sheffield is easily accessible for all areas of the UK. The city also has excellent road and rail links with three international airports nearby. Within Sheffield itself, travel is just as convenient, with great bus and Supertram services running regularly throughout the day to all the major city attractions.

Evening meal 9th July (optional)
If you would like to have an evening meal in The Edge dining room we are able to offer this facility to you at a cost of £18.00 for a fresh daily 'Chef's choice dinner' served between 6.00-7.00pm. You can book and pay for this on the CSCY registration form. A SAMPLE of a self service evening meal can be viewed here.
Welcome Address
Professor Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of The Unviersity of Sheffield will open the conference with a welcome address.
Conference Cancellation Policy
If you wish to cancel your booking you must give written notice to us of such cancellation. If you cancel your booking, a charge will be made and calculated as a percentage of the total booking value according to the scale below:
Before 28 days prior to the event - 20 percent
28-14 days prior to the event - 50 percent
14-7 days prior to the event - 80 percent
7 days or less prior to the event - 100 percent.
